Fraction calculator
Add, subtract, multiply or divide two fractions. You can type fractions (3/4), mixed numbers (1 1/2), whole numbers or decimals (0.75). The answer is simplified and shown as a mixed number and a decimal, with the working.
Worked example
With the values shown above when the page opens:
3/4 + 5/6 = 19/12
- 3/4 + 5/6
- Common denominator: 12
- = 9/12 + 10/12
- = 19/12
- Simplify by dividing top and bottom by their highest common factor: 19/12
How it works
- To add or subtract, rewrite both fractions over a common denominator, then add or subtract the tops.
- To multiply, multiply the tops together and the bottoms together.
- To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply.
- Always simplify at the end by dividing the top and bottom by their highest common factor.
Questions
How do I add mixed numbers?
Type them with a space, like 1 1/2 + 2 3/4. The calculator turns them into improper fractions, adds, and gives the answer as a mixed number too.
What is the fastest way to find a common denominator?
Use the least common multiple of the two denominators. For 4 and 6 that is 12.
Why is dividing by a fraction the same as multiplying by its flip?
Dividing by 1/2 asks how many halves fit, which is doubling. Multiplying by 2/1 does the same.
