How to play

  1. Win tricks

You each play one card to a trick. The higher card of the suit led wins, and a trump beats any other suit. The order, low to high, is 9, jack, queen, king, 10, ace.

  2. Declare a meld

The winner of a trick may declare one meld: a king and queen together, four aces, a run in trump, and more. Each one scores points. Then you both draw a card.

  3. Take counters

Every ace, 10 and king you take in tricks scores a point, and the last trick scores ten. When all the cards are gone, the higher total wins.

Quick answers about playing Pinochle on Wittlo.

Is Pinochle free?

Yes. It is free to play, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

Is any real money involved?

No. This is free play for fun only. There are no stakes, no prizes and nothing to buy.

What cards are used?

A pack of 48: the 9, jack, queen, king, 10 and ace of each suit, two of each. That is why four aces can be of mixed suits and still count as a meld.

Do I have to follow suit?

Not while there are cards left to draw. After the last draw you must follow suit, win the trick if you can, and play a trump if you cannot follow.

Which melds count?

A dix (the 9 of trump) is 1 point. A king and queen of one suit, a marriage, is 2 points, or 4 in trump. A run (ace, 10, king, queen, jack of trump) is 15. Pinochle (queen of spades and jack of diamonds) is 4. Four aces are 10, kings 8, queens 6 and jacks 4.

Can I use a card in two melds?

Yes, in a different kind of meld. A card cannot be used twice for the same kind of meld, and every new meld needs at least one card not yet used for it.
