Wild Chess, free to play
Chess with a twist: the back rank is shuffled, so each game starts with a different army. Both sides get the same pieces, so it is always fair. A new position every day.

How to play
Look at the army
Your king and seven other pieces are shuffled along the back row. Black has exactly the same pieces on the same files. The pawns are as normal.
Play as usual
All the usual rules apply: check, checkmate, stalemate, en passant and promotion. There is no castling, because the king and rooks can start anywhere.
Win or draw
Checkmate the computer to win. Choose Today's position to play the same one as everyone else, or a new random position for practice.
Ways to play
Good to know
Quick answers about playing Wild Chess on Wittlo.
Is Wild Chess free?
Yes. It is free to play, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
Is it fair?
Yes. White and Black get the same pieces on the same files, so neither side starts with an army that is better than the other. White still moves first, as in ordinary chess.
Why is there no castling?
In a shuffled start the king and rooks can be anywhere, so the usual castling rules do not fit. Everything else works as in standard chess.
Can I get a really strong or weak army?
The pieces are chosen so that each side has a normal amount of material, give or take a little, so no start is hopeless. A position with two queens is possible.
Is this the same as Chess960?
No. Chess960 only rearranges the usual pieces. Wild Chess can give you extra queens, rooks or knights as well as a shuffled order.
