How to play

  1. Pick a side

Choose White (you move first) or Black, and a level. Tap one of your pieces and the squares it can move to are marked. Tap one to move there.

  2. Capture and defend

Pieces capture by moving onto an enemy piece. The game knows every rule, including castling, en passant and promotion, and only lets you make legal moves.

  3. Checkmate the king

When a king is attacked, that is check, and it must escape. If it cannot, that is checkmate and the game is over. Stalemate and other draws are recognised too.

Quick answers about playing Chess on Wittlo.

Is Chess free?

Yes. It is free to play, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

How strong is the computer?

It is a casual opponent, not a master. Easy makes plenty of mistakes, Medium plays sensibly, and Hard plans a few moves ahead, which is a fair test for most casual players.

Does it know all the rules?

Yes: castling, en passant, promotion, check, checkmate, stalemate, the fifty-move rule, repetition and drawn endings with too few pieces.

Can I take a move back or get a hint?

Yes. Undo has no limit, and Hint suggests a good move for you.

Is the game saved?

Yes. If you leave part-way, it is saved on this device and you can carry on later. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Can I play Black?

Yes. Choose Black in the box called You play. The board turns round, and the computer moves first.
