How to play

  1. Bid your tricks

Look at your hand and bid how many tricks you expect to win. Spades are always trump. Your bid and your partner North's bid are added together. Bid Nil to try to take none.

  2. Play the tricks

Follow the suit that was led if you can. The highest card of that suit wins, unless a spade is played, in which case the highest spade wins. Spades cannot lead until one has been played.

  3. Make your bid

If you and your partner take at least as many tricks as you bid, you score 10 points for each trick bid, and a point for each extra trick. Fall short, and you lose 10 points per trick bid.

Is Spades free?

Yes. It is free to play, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

Who is my partner?

North, the player across the table. You and North work together against West and East.

What is Nil?

A bid to take no tricks at all. Succeed and your side scores 100 points; take a trick and it costs 100.

Extra tricks beyond your bid. Each is worth one point, but collecting ten of them costs your side 100 points.

Why can I not play a spade?
