One of the oldest board games in the world. Roll the dice, race your checkers home and bear them off first.

How to play

  1. Roll and move

Roll the dice, then move checkers by the numbers shown. You are red and move from the top right round to the bottom right. Tap a checker, then tap where it goes.

  2. Hit and block

You cannot land on a point where the computer has two or more checkers. A single checker is a blot: land on it and it goes to the bar, and must come back in before anything else moves.

  3. Bear off to win

Once all fifteen of your checkers are in your home board (the bottom right), take them off with exact numbers. First to bear off all fifteen wins.

Quick answers about playing Backgammon on Wittlo.

Is Backgammon free?

Yes. It is free to play, with no sign-up and nothing to install.

Is there a doubling cube?

No. This is a single game with no stakes. A gammon (the loser has taken off none) or backgammon is named when you win.

Who goes first?

You do. The dice are rolled for you when you press the button.

What if I cannot move?

Your turn passes. If you can play only one of two dice, you must play the larger one if you can, and the game makes sure of that.

What happens with doubles?

You play the number four times.

Is my game saved?

No. A game is quick, so one you leave part-way is not kept.
