How to play Backgammon
One of the oldest board games. Roll the dice, move your checkers home, and take them off first.
The rules, step by step
- You play the red checkers and move from the top right, round the board, to your home on the bottom right. The computer plays the dark checkers and goes the other way.
- Press Roll the dice. You move your checkers by the numbers shown, one move for each die. Doubles give you four moves.
- Tap one of your checkers. The points it can reach are highlighted in green. Tap one to move there.
- You cannot land on a point where the computer has two or more checkers. If it has just one, you hit it: it goes to the bar in the middle, and must start again.
- If you have a checker on the bar, you must bring it back in before you move anything else. Tap the bar to do it.
- Once all your checkers are in your home (the bottom right six points), you can take them off the board. Tap one and press Bear off.
- The first to take all 15 checkers off wins.
An example
You roll a 3 and a 5. Tap a checker, and the points three places on and five places on are highlighted.
Choose one. The die you used is crossed off, and you move again with the other.
Tips
- Choose Easy while you learn.
- Press Hint to be shown a good move. Only legal moves are ever offered.
- Two checkers together on a point are safe, and they block the computer.
- A single checker on its own can be hit, so try not to leave one where the computer can reach it.
- There is no timer. Take as long as you like.
