How to play Crossword
Read a clue, work out the word, and write it into the grid. Words cross each other and share letters.
The rules, step by step
- Each numbered square is where a word starts. Words go across or down.
- Read the clue for a number. The number in brackets tells you how many letters the answer has.
- Tap a square and type the letters. They fill in one after another along the word.
- Tap the same square again, or press Space, to switch between the across word and the down word that share that square.
- When two words cross, they share a letter. A letter you know from one word helps with the other.
- A wrong letter turns red straight away. You can switch that off with the Show mistakes as I go box.
- Press Check to mark any wrong letters. Press Reveal letter or Reveal word if you are stuck.
An example
1 across: Pet that purrs (3). The answer has three letters. CAT fits.
1 down: Farm animal that gives milk (3). This word starts in the same square, so it also begins with C. COW fits.
The C is shared by both words. Each answer you find gives you letters for the words that cross it.
Tips
- Start with the clues you are sure about. Short ones are usually easiest.
- If a word does not fit, one of the crossing words may be wrong. Press Check to find out.
- You can also print crosswords: see the Print page.
