How to play Fill-in
A crossword with no clues. You are given the words, and you fit them into the grid.
The rules, step by step
- The grid has empty places for words, and the list underneath has every word you must use.
- Tap a square to choose a place. The place you have chosen is highlighted, and it tells you how many letters it needs.
- Tap a word from the list to put it there. The word must have the right number of letters, and it must match any letters that cross it.
- Tap the same square again to switch between the across place and the down place.
- Every word is used exactly once. A word already in the grid is shaded in the list.
- A word that fits but is not the right one for that place turns red straight away. You can switch that off with the Show mistakes as I go box.
- If you change your mind, choose the place and press Clear this word.
An example
Imagine the grid has a place for a 5-letter word going down, and a place for a 4-letter word going across, and the two places cross.
The list has PLANT and TREE. PLANT is the only 5-letter word, so it must go in the 5-letter place. TREE goes in the 4-letter place.
They cross at a T. It is the last letter of PLANT and the first letter of TREE, so both words share it. Fitting the words together like this is the whole puzzle.
Tips
- Start with the longest words. Few words have that many letters, so there is less to choose from.
- Some words may already be placed for you. They are shaded, and you can use their letters to help.
- There is only one right answer. If a word fits but later words will not, try a different one.
