How to play Wild Chess
Chess with a shuffled back rank: a random army for both sides and no castling.
The rules, step by step
- Choose a level, your colour, and Today's position or a new random one.
- Your king and seven other pieces are shuffled along the back row. Black has the same pieces on the same files.
- Tap a piece, then tap a highlighted square to move it. The pawns and all other rules are as in ordinary chess.
- There is no castling. Press Hint for a suggestion or Undo to take back a move.
- Checkmate the computer to win.
An example
If your back rank is Q R N K B R Q N, the queens start in the corners of the board. Think about which pieces can come out first.
Tips
- Look for the strongest pieces and plan to bring them into play early.
- A king in the corner or the middle may need a different kind of care from the usual one. Keep it behind your pawns.
- Two queens are powerful, but so is a queen that gets traded too early. Protect what you have.
