Are these flashcards free?
Yes. They are free to use, with no sign-up and nothing to install.
Are they useful for GRE, TOEFL or SAT vocabulary?
Many of the words are the kind of advanced vocabulary that turns up in careful reading and writing, and people use flashcards like these alongside their own study for tests such as the GRE, TOEFL, SAT and GMAT. It is a practice aid only: we do not claim any word appears on any particular test, and we make no promise about results.
How do the flashcards remember what I know?
Each word sits in one of four boxes. A word you know moves up a box, and a word you miss goes back to box one, so it comes up again sooner. Your boxes are saved in this browser only.
Where do the definitions come from?
The definitions and example sentences are original, written for this site. They have not yet been reviewed by a second person, so if you spot a mistake, please tell us.
Can I study one topic at a time?
Yes. Choose a topic from the Words menu, such as people and character, science and research, or thinking and judging.
Where do the word lists come from?
We wrote the words, definitions and example sentences ourselves. The GRE-style list is made of rarer, more literary words, and the TOEFL-style list of academic words used in textbooks and lectures. They are not copied from any test or any other site.
Is anything sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
