How to play Word Analogies
Find the link in a pair of words, then pick the word that makes the same link with the third.
The rules, step by step
- Each question reads "A is to B as C is to what?". Four words are offered.
- First say how A and B are connected, in a short sentence: "a pen is used to write".
- Then use the same sentence with C: "a knife is used to cut". Pick the word that fits.
- After you answer you see the link, and for a wrong answer, the trap it fell into.
- A set has ten questions. You can play today's set, or a new one at any level.
An example
Bird is to Nest as Bee is to Hive. The link is an animal and its home. Honey is on the same topic as the bee, but it is not the bee's home.
Tips
- Common links are opposites, same meaning, tool and job, part and whole, and cause and effect.
- Check the direction. If the first pair goes tool to job, so must your answer.
- Two answers may seem to fit. The better one matches the link exactly, not just the topic.
