How to play Checkers
The classic board game against the computer. Jump over the other side's pieces until they have none left.
The rules, step by step
- You play the light pieces and move first. The computer plays the dark pieces. Pieces move one square diagonally forward, on the dark squares only.
- Tap one of your pieces to choose it. The squares it can move to are highlighted.
- Then tap the square you want to move to.
- To capture, jump diagonally over an enemy piece into the empty square just behind it. The piece you jumped is removed.
- If you can jump, you must. If a piece can keep jumping after landing, it must carry on.
- When a piece reaches the far row it becomes a king, shown with a crown. A king can move and jump backwards as well as forwards.
- You win when the computer has no pieces left, or cannot move.
An example
Say your piece is on a dark square, and the computer's piece is on the square diagonally in front of it, with an empty square just behind that.
You can jump. Tap your piece, then tap the empty square behind the enemy piece. Your piece lands there and the enemy piece is taken off the board.
Tips
- Choose Easy while you learn. Medium and Hard think further ahead.
- Press Hint to be shown a good move, and Undo to take a move back. You can use them as often as you like.
- Pieces on the edge of the board cannot be jumped, so they are safe.
- Try to keep your back row at home for a while. It stops the computer making a king.
- There is no timer. Take as long as you like.
