How to play Cribbage
A classic scoring card game for two. Play to 31, count your hands, and be first to 121 points.
The rules, step by step
- You and the computer each get six cards. Choose two to put face down in the "crib", a spare hand that belongs to whoever dealt. Keep four cards that go well together.
- A starter card is turned face up. Then you take turns putting down one card at a time, and a running total is kept. The total can never go over 31.
- You score as you play: 2 for making the total exactly 15 or exactly 31, 2 for putting down a card of the same number as the last one (a pair), points for three or more cards in a row (a run), and 1 for the last card.
- If you cannot play without going over 31, you say "Go". The game does this for you, and gives a point to whoever played last.
- When all the cards are played, each hand is counted with the starter card, and then the crib: 2 for every set of cards adding up to 15, 2 for each pair, 1 for every card in a run, and a bonus for a flush.
- The game shows every score item by item, so you can see how each hand was counted.
- The first to reach 121 points wins.
An example
Say the running total is 10 and you put down a 5. The total is now 15, so you score 2.
Counting a hand: a 5, a 10 and a jack. The 5 and the 10 make 15 (2 points), and the 5 and the jack also make 15 (2 more). That is 4 points.
Tips
- Choose Easy while you learn. Normal keeps its best cards.
- Press Hint if you are not sure what to put in the crib or play.
- Cards worth 10 (tens and picture cards) are useful, because a 5 makes 15 with any of them.
- Do not worry about the counting: the game does it and explains every point.
- There is no timer. Take as long as you like.
