How to play Cryptarithm
A sum in which every letter stands for a digit. Work out which digit each letter is.
The rules, step by step
- You are shown a sum with letters instead of digits, such as SEND + MORE = MONEY.
- The same letter is always the same digit. Different letters are always different digits.
- No number starts with a zero, so the first letter of each word is never 0.
- Work from the rightmost column to the left, remembering to carry, just as in a written sum.
- Enter your digits and press Check at any time. Press Hint for a nudge.
- Every puzzle has exactly one answer. If you want to see it, press Show solution.
A way in
In a two-line sum, the carry into the leftmost column can only be 0 or 1. So if a letter on the leftmost column of the answer has no partner above it, it must be 1.
Tips
- Start with the easy level.
- Look for letters that must be 0 or 1, then work out which other letters follow from them.
- Write down what each column can be, and cross out digits that are already used.
