How to play Cryptogram
A saying has had its letters swapped for others. Work out the swaps to read it.
The rules, step by step
- Each coded letter always stands for the same real letter, and no letter stands for itself.
- Type your guess in the box above a coded letter. Every copy of that coded letter fills in at once.
- Spaces and punctuation are not coded, so word lengths and apostrophes help.
- A one-letter word is almost always A or I. Common short words are THE, AND, OF, TO and IS.
- Press Check to mark wrong guesses, or Hint to reveal one letter.
Where to start
If the same three-letter coded word appears more than once, try THE or AND. Then use those letters everywhere else.
Tips
- Look at the most common coded letters first: E, T and A are common in English.
- Double letters in a word are often LL, EE, SS or OO.
- If a word stops making sense, one of your guesses is wrong. Change the one you were least sure of.
