How to play FreeCell
A card game where you can see every card. Build all four suits up from the ace to the king in the top row.
The rules, step by step
- All 52 cards are face up in eight columns. Nothing is hidden, so you can plan ahead.
- At the top right are four places where the suits are built, starting with the ace. This is where you are trying to get every card.
- At the top left are four free cells. Each can hold one card for a while, to get it out of the way.
- In the columns you build downwards, taking turns between red and black. A red 7 can go on a black 8, and a black 6 can go on that red 7. Any card can go into an empty column.
- Tap a card to choose it. If cards below it are in order, they come along with it. The places it can go are highlighted, and you are told in words where it fits.
- Then tap where you want it to go. Tap the same card again to send it up to the top row, if it fits there.
- You can only carry several cards at once if you have enough free cells and empty columns. With all four cells free you can carry five cards. If you cannot carry that many, the game tells you why.
- You win when all four suits are built up to the king in the top row.
An example
Say column 2 ends with the 8 of spades, and column 5 ends with the 7 of hearts.
The 7 of hearts is red and the 8 of spades is black, and 7 is one less than 8. So the 7 of hearts can go onto the 8 of spades.
Tap the 7 of hearts, then tap the 8 of spades. If the card under the 7 of hearts is now useful, you can use it next.
Tips
- Every game here can be won. If you are stuck, press Hint: it finds a real way to win from where you are.
- Try not to fill all four free cells. A free cell that is empty lets you move more cards.
- Try to empty a whole column. An empty column is as useful as a free cell, and it lets you carry more cards at once.
- Look for the aces and 2s first, and see how deep they are buried.
- Press Undo as often as you like.
