How to play Gin Rummy
A card game for two. Collect sets and runs, then knock to end the hand when you have few cards left over.
The rules, step by step
- You and the computer are each dealt 10 cards. Your aim is to sort them into sets and runs.
- A set is three or four cards of the same number, such as three 7s. A run is three or more cards in a row in the same suit, such as the 4, 5 and 6 of hearts. The ace counts as low, so it goes before the 2.
- Each turn, take one card: either the face-up card from the discard pile, or the top card of the face-down pile. Then throw one card away on the discard pile.
- The game sorts your cards for you and groups the sets and runs, so you can see what you have. Cards in no set or run are left over.
- Left-over cards count against you: an ace is 1, the picture cards are 10, and the other cards are worth their number.
- When your left-over cards add up to 10 or less, you can press Knock to end the hand. If you have none left over at all, that is called Gin.
- The player with fewer points left over scores the difference. If you knock but the computer has the same or less, it scores instead, plus a bonus of 25.
- When someone reaches the target score, the game ends.
An example
Say you hold the 7 of hearts and the 7 of clubs, and the face-up card is the 7 of spades.
Take it. Now you have three 7s, which is a set. Then throw away your least useful card.
Tips
- Choose Easy while you learn. Normal builds its hand more carefully.
- Press Hint if you are not sure what to take or throw away.
- Throw away high cards that are not part of anything. They cost the most if you are caught holding them.
- You cannot throw back the card you have just picked up from the discard pile.
- There is no timer. Take as long as you like.
