How to play Mahjong Solitaire
Clear the whole board by removing matching pairs of tiles.
The rules, step by step
- The board is a pile of tiles, some on top of others. Your job is to remove every tile.
- You remove tiles two at a time. The two tiles must match.
- A tile can only be moved if it is free. A tile is free when nothing is on top of it, and its left side or its right side is open.
- Only free tiles are buttons you can tap. Tap one to choose it, then tap a second free tile that matches. Both tiles disappear.
- Tiles match when they are exactly the same. The exceptions are the flowers and the seasons: any flower matches any other flower, and any season matches any other season.
- Press Hint to be shown a pair you can play now. Press Undo to take back a move.
- If there are no matches left to make, press Shuffle. The tiles that are left are mixed up into new places, and they can all be cleared.
- You win when the board is empty.
An example
The board has two tiles showing 3 of dots, and both are free: nothing is on top of them, and each has an open side.
Tap one of them, and then the other. They match, so both disappear.
Removing them may free the tiles that were underneath, or next to them, and there will be new matches to find.
Tips
- Look for tiles that are holding many others down, and match those first.
- If you have a choice between two tiles that match, choose the pair that frees the most tiles.
- Every game can be won, but a different choice of pairs can lead you to a dead end. That is what Shuffle and Undo are for.
- Try the small board first. It has 42 tiles.
