How to play Reading Speed Test
Read a short story at your normal pace and see your words per minute.
The rules, step by step
- Choose one of the four stories. Each is about 250 words.
- Press Start reading. The clock starts, and the story appears.
- Read silently at your normal pace, the way you would for pleasure. Do not rush or skim.
- Press Done as soon as you reach the end.
- Answer the three questions without looking back. Your words per minute appear, with the usual adult range for comparison.
An example
A 250-word story read in 60 seconds is 250 words per minute, which is in the usual range for adults.
Tips
- Read the way you normally would. Racing makes the result less useful.
- A very high speed with wrong answers usually means you skimmed.
- A slower pace is normal, especially for careful reading or reading in a second language.
