How to play Reversi
Trap the computer's discs between yours and turn them over. Whoever has more discs at the end wins.
The rules, step by step
- The board has 64 squares. You play black and go first. The computer plays white. Each side starts with two discs in the middle.
- On your turn, put a black disc on an empty square so that it traps one or more white discs in a straight line (across, down or diagonally) between your new disc and another black disc.
- Every white disc trapped that way turns black. A single move can turn over discs in several directions at once.
- If you cannot trap any discs, you must pass. The computer then plays again. If neither side can move, the game ends.
- When the board is full or nobody can move, the side with more discs wins.
- With "Show where I can play" on, the squares you may choose are marked with a dot. Press Hint to see a good square, and Undo to take a move back.
An example
Say there is a white disc with a black disc on its right. If you place a black disc on the empty square to its left, the white disc is trapped between your two black discs, and it turns black.
Tips
- Corner squares can never be turned over, so they are very valuable. Try not to give the computer a corner.
- Having the most discs in the middle of the game is not always good. A smaller number of discs gives you more choice of moves.
- Choose Easy while you learn, then try Medium and Hard.
